Lt. Backous has been with the Story County Sheriff’s Office since 2002 where he has served as a Detention Officer (2002-2005), Deputy Sheriff (2005-2012), Tactical Team Member (2008-2017), Policy Writing Specialist (2012), Dive Team Supervisor (2012-2017), and Support Services Sergeant (2012-2017). In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he is the Commander of the Support Services Division. In that role he oversees the civil process, sex offender registry, financial data management, weapons permits, the firearms program, the Sheriff’s Reserve Unit, training, criminal records, contracts, Citizen’s Academy, and internships.
Lt. Backous has a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degree in criminal justice and is a member of the InterAgency Board (IAB) where he serves as the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) representative on the Standards Coordination Subgroup. He also serves as a subject matter expert (SME) and Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Homeland Security Emergency Services Sector Coordinating Council (DHS-ESSCC).
